How InfiniQuest is Licensed

Open source that protects users and sustains development

Free & Open Source (AGPL-3.0)

InfiniQuest's core is and always will be free and open source.

  • Use it for any purpose - personal, educational, commercial
  • Modify it to meet your needs
  • Share it with others
  • Improvements must be shared back with the community
  • If you run it as a service, users can request the source code

This ensures InfiniQuest can never be locked away in a proprietary product.

Ethical Requirements (Everyone)

All users must follow our ethical guidelines - no exceptions, no matter how much you pay.

  • No exploiting or manipulating users
  • Data collection must pass "The Grandma Test" - so clear no one can be tricked
  • No surveillance capitalism or creepy tracking
  • Users own and control their data completely
  • Technology must serve humanity, not exploit it

Network & Deployment (Safety First)

For the safety of families and children, InfiniQuest has specific deployment restrictions.

  • Local/private instances for your family or organization - YES
  • Public SaaS offerings - NO (safety reasons)
  • Only InfiniQuest LLC runs the official cloud service
  • Prevents bad actors from creating honeypot services

We can't verify the security of third-party public services, so we keep it local or official.

Success Contribution (Large Organizations)

Organizations with >$250K annual revenue that use InfiniQuest commercially are asked to contribute to sustainability.

  • Helps keep InfiniQuest free for families and individuals
  • Funds ongoing development and improvements
  • Provides support and input on roadmap
  • Optional AGPL exemption for proprietary integration needs

Think of it as successful organizations helping maintain the commons that enabled their success.

Why This Licensing Model?

We chose this four-part approach to balance several important goals:

This isn't just about code - it's about building technology that serves humanity instead of exploiting it.

Common Questions

Can I use InfiniQuest for my family for free?

Yes! InfiniQuest is completely free for personal and family use. No hidden costs, no premium features locked away.

What if I'm a small business?

If your annual revenue is under $250K, you can use InfiniQuest for free under the AGPL + Ethical licenses. Just remember to share any improvements back to the community.

What if I work at a large company?

Companies over $250K revenue using InfiniQuest commercially should contribute to support development. This helps keep the project sustainable and free for everyone else. Contact [email protected] to discuss.

Can I create my own version?

Yes! You can fork and modify InfiniQuest. You just can't use our name, must follow the ethical requirements, and must share your improvements (AGPL). If you're a large organization, you may need a success contribution license.

What about schools and nonprofits?

Educational institutions and registered nonprofits are exempt from success contribution requirements, regardless of size. We want to support organizations doing good in the world.

How is this different from other "open source" projects?

Many projects claim to be "open source" but use restrictive licenses or have a "bait and switch" model. InfiniQuest is truly open (AGPL), with ethical guardrails to prevent misuse, and a transparent sustainability model where only successful commercial users contribute.
